Dear Friends of the SAS Band!

Well, first of all mucho apologies for my lack of communication this year. This has absolutely nothing to do with me being born bone idle and is completely down to me running around for most of 2002 like the proverbial blue-bottomed fly!! The year started with a wonderful repose in the wilds of the Californian desert (near Joshua Tree National Park) with the future 'memsahib'. This was four months of complete drop-out bliss with only silence, blue skies, coyotes and scorpions for company. It was during this period of R&R that I started the first faltering steps towards the mighty tome that will ultimately be my memoirs but hold your horses, folks! Don't rush off to W.H. Smith's with an order just yet; it'll be awhile and please don't ask how it's going it's going bloody slow, all right?!??

My desert solitude was finally destroyed when I had to return to London to start rehearsals for 'We Will Rock You', the musical written by Queen and Ben Elton, currently running at the Dominion Theatre, Tottenham Court Road. It opened in May with the most vicious slaughtering by the press that anyone has ever seen. Fortunately, all the TV shows, Capital Radio and Radio 2 loved it and after two great promotional performances at the Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace and the 'Party in the Park' the show has been playing to packed houses all summer. The audiences are loving it and they are the people who count. As dear old Freddie (Gawd bless 'im) used to say, Critics talk out of their arses! Wise words indeed! Needless to say, it's a stonking great show and if you even slightly like the music of Queen you'll love it. There are some great performances, some good funny bits and of course some brilliant songs. So take my word and go see it you won't be disappointed.

The band has had a couple of forays into gigworld. We had a fun-packed trip to New Orleans, a quick holiday together in sunny Malta and an exhausting whirlwind jaunt around Germany.

However the jewel in this summer's gig crown went to a fabulous event-filled trip to Bulgaria! We had two brilliant shows in the picturesque town of Bansko at the foot of the Pirin mountains, near the Greek border. As you can imagine, the poor locals had never seen anything like us before and I think we left them in a state of shock! So much so that I was invited on to the local TV chat show, Bulgaria's answer to David Letterman, to answer questions (through an interpreter!) and play 'WWRY' with the house band. (I know a tape of this is going to turn up one day just to embarrass the wotsit out of me completely).

I'm now back treading the boards in the West End (I'm actually writing this letter in the quiet bit between 'Who Wants To Live Forever' and 'Seven Seas of Rhye') and if anyone else calls me a Thespian I'm gonna get the right hump. So now to news of impending Christmas jollities! They start at The Brook in Southampton on the 4th and 5th December then continue at Chiddingfold on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the 6th, 7th and 8th. Under discussion, but not confirmed at this time, is a possible gig at a London venue. If and when it's confirmed, it will appear on the website

I'm intending to move over to broadband very soon and this'll allow us to have an email club which means you'll be able to add yourself, edit your details and introduce new friends without me having to do it for you ... hurrah!! More on that later when I get my head around the technology.

Well that's it for now folks. I'll leave it to the lovely Jill Davies to give you all the necessary ticket details. I'm looking forward the December shows I think they're gonna be a complete hoot and you can do somebody a good turn. If you know someone whose life is at a low ebb, then do 'em a favour! Bring them along to one of our shows they'll take one look at the state of Jamie Moses and their life won't seem so bad!

OK you lucky people, be happy and we'll see you in December.

STOP PRESS .....! For the last couple of years I've been endeavouring to get an SAS Band TV show made. The good news is that I'm on the verge of confirming the production of a pilot show (fingers crossed) to be filmed sometime late January 2003. Once confirmed we'll need an audience for the first historic show! If you think you'd like to be part of this event, keep an eye on the website and we'll keep you informed. I'm working hard to make this happen and hope to have some good news for you soon .......

The following is a list of the Brian May Band members (which consists of many SAS Band members as well), and their profiles. An exclusive page has been provided for Twit E. Conway. Be sure and check it out! There is also a long-standing tribute page for drummer legend, Cozy Powell.

Queen fans will readily recognize the versatilely talented SPIKE EDNEY. Spike is the founder of Spikes All Stars (SAS), who in addition to Spike, have featured the likes of Chaka Khan, Paul Rodgers, Brian May, Roger Chapman, Curtis Stigers, Kiki Dee, Roger Taylor, Jamie Moses, former FABBA girls (the pretty things now touring with BRIAN!!), Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann), Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet), Paul Young (Chipmunk cheeks), Fish (Marillion), Mark Shaw (Then Jericho) and the late, great Cozy Powell.

Spike played keyboards under Roger Taylor's bum (I know a few Queenie gals who'd happily trade their right....) for Queen's final tour. Uncle Spikey went on to co-found The Cross with Rog in 1986. He also co-produced the bands LP's and penned some of the band's more stylishly romantic ballads and the funkier upbeats. (I always loved The Cross!) Ridiculously understated, Spike is the Paul Schaefer of the UK. Some of his more notable accomplishments include directing Motown artist Edwin Starr, touring the USA and Euorpe. Spikey toured and recorded, playing trombone, of all things, with The Boomtown Rats, Dexy's Midnight Runnerss and Thomas Dolby. He also toured and recorded with Bob Geldof and produced American artist Valerie.

Spike played keyboards and additional guitar with QUEEN, including appearances at LIVE AID, & ROCK IN RIO and was the co-musical director of THE FREDDIE MERCURY TRIBUTE concert. Spike made innumerable concert & T.V. appearances with The SAS BAND featuring Paul Rodgers, Chaka Khan, Curtis Stigers and others.

More recently, Spike played sessions for the Gary Barlow Solo Album and toured and recorded with legendary blues guitarist Peter Green ( Founder of Fleetwood Mac), over-seeing production of the same. He played in the 'House Band' To celebrate Fender Guitars 50th. Anniversary Concert with Yngwie J. Malmsteen. Before heading out with BRIAN, Spike toured extensively with The Splinter Group. Spike celebrates his birthday quietly, a-hem, on the 11th of each December. BEWARE OF OLD MAN!!

Spike is now in the band for We Will Rock You - The Musical, now playing at the Dominion Theatre in London's West End.

Neil Murray in Russia

Bassist Extraordinaire, NEIL MURRAY, was born August 27, 1950 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Neil is a soft spoken, caring and likable guy who loves a good book when he's not touring with another rock legend. A highly regarded session musician, Neil remains in big-time demand. He joined the ranks of these notable bands: Cozy Powell's Hammer (stand-in bassist), Whitesnake, Gary Moore's Band, MGM (ex-Whitesnake guys), BLACK SABBATH, SAS, Peter Green & Splinter Group and The Brian May Band, natch!.

He recorded tracks or albums as a session player with: Jon Lord, Graham Bonnet, Clapton/Beck/Sting (Amnesty Int'l. Gig), Scorpions (demos for 'Love At First Sting), Ian Gillan, Glen Tipton, and 'In From The Storm ' orchestral Hendrix album. He also played on gigs, TV shows or just rehearsals with Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Paul Rodgers, Nuno Bettencourt (all at 'Guitar Legends' in Seville, Spain), Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Young, Curtis Stigers, Roger Taylor, Bret Michaels, Robert Palmer, Ozzy Osbourne, and others too numerous to mention here. He's also by far and large the finest hug in rock and roll!

Neil is currently working with the band Company of Snakes. The official website is at Check it out!

Neil is now in the band for We Will Rock You - The Musical, now playing at the Dominion Theatre in London's West End.

The line-up wouldn't be complete without a mention of Brian's wing man, JAMIE MOSES.

Jamie is a one of Britain's top session guitarist. Having collaborated with the likes of Freddie Mercury, Paul Young, Tony Hadley, Olivia Newton-John, really too many to mention! Jamie's combo credits include a 70's band called Merlin, who recorded an album on the CBS label and toured supporting David Essex. Coincidently, Melody Maker profiled the two new bands, Queen and Merlin, comparing one against the other.

An extremely talented vocalist and songwriter, Jamie appears on the Bob Geldof 1992 CD, "The Happy Club". Jamie co-wrote "The Song Of the Emergent Nationalist" and "In a Dream Gone By", from Paul Young's 1997 CD of the same name. He has toured with Paul Young and Los Pacaminos, a London area Tex-Mex band for many years. The long-awaited Los Pacaminos album is finally available at all good record stores. Buy it NOW - here!

Jamie had quite a successful run as the support act on Paul Young's 2001 British Spring Tour and he is now available for solo gigs... If you have the chance, go see him, you won't be disappointed! Check his site for further details ...

2002 has been a busy year for Mr. Moses as he toured with Los Pacaminos and Paul Young in the Spring, toured the US and Australia & Germany with Bob Geldof, The BIG Annual SAS December Dates and MORE Pacs dates are currently lined up throughout the end of the year. PHEW!

The new kid on the block is ERIC SINGER. His real name is Eric Mensinger. Mr. Mensinger was born in Cleveland on May 12, 1958. Eric joined the rock band, Kiss in 1991 after Eric Carr had passed away from heart cancer on November 24, 1991. (A day that will live in infamy for a few of us it would appear.) He has also recorded and/or performed with Lita Ford, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Gary Moore and with Paul Stanley on Paul's 1989 solo club tour. You can sample Eric's drumming on Black Sabbath's Seventh Star and Eternal Idol, the Bandland's Bandlands LP, Ace Frehley Tribute CD: The Return Of The Comet, on tracks 4, 9 and 11. Welcome aboard, Eric!

Chris Thompson, vocalist extraordinaire, is a talented singer, songwriter, performer AND he writes children's books. Is there no end to this man's talents?! Chris has recorded with Brian, and toured with the Brian May Band in 1992. In 1992 Chris was also extensively involved in the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert held at Wembley Stadium. He was responsible for rehearsing the band and all the artists that appeared.

Chris was born in the United Kingdom, and raised in New Zealand. He became a professional musician in 1971, and moved back to England in 1973.

He joined Manfred Mann's Earth Band in 1974. Since becoming a member of the band, Chris has sung on international hits such as Blinded By The Light, which reached No.1 in the U.S. and all around the world. The Earth Band spent from 1975-77 extensively touring America and Europe. In 1978 they released Watch, which featured Chris Thompson. The song Davy's On The Road Again reached the Top 5 in England and Germany. Watch has sold over 700,000 copies in Germany alone.

In 1979, Chris left The Earth Band to form "Night" a Los Angeles-based band, who enjoyed two Top 20 hits, "Hot Summer Nights" and "If You Remember Me", which was the title theme from the movie "The Champ". The group broke up in 1982 and Chris (who had still been doing session work with the Earth Band on a semi-regular basis), rejoined Manfred to finish the album Somewhere in Africa. After a successful European tour with The Earth Band to promote this album, Chris and drummer John Lingwood, produced a live album and video from Budapest, Hungary called Live in Budapest. Manfred Mann's Earth Band was the first western rock band to work in Budapest.

In 1983 Chris released his first solo album, Out Of The Night. He also worked extensively with ex Doobie Brother Patrick Simmons, both writing and singing on Patrick's solo album Arcade, which produced the Top 20 hit So Wrong.

In 1984 Manfred Mann's Earth Band had a Top 20 hit with The Runner on Arista Records. Chris's second solo album, Radio Voices, featured Brian May and was released in 1985. Later he worked with Manfred Mann on Criminal Tango, and began working on another solo album The High Cost Of Living, which was released in 1986. It's Not Over, a song from this album featured in the film Playing For Keeps.

In 1989, the Wimbledon Tennis Championship brought about another success for Chris when he wrote and performed the official championship song The Challenge which became No.1 hit in Germany. Another solo album, Beat of Love, was released in 1991. That same year, he had a Top Ten hit in Germany with The Joker, theme song from the television series Jolly Joker.

In 1993 he made his debut with Alan Parsons on the album Try Anything Once. This was followed a few months later with an extensive tour in the U.S. This same year, Chris also performed at the charity concert for Children Under Siege in Los Angeles. In 1984 Chris sang the theme from the successful German TV series Florida Lady. This series also gave birth to a brand new recording of Blinded By The Light. In 1994, Chris was part of the original SAS Band line up at the Summer Gosport Festival. He continues to be a crucial member of the band.

The 1995 Alan Parsons album The Very Best Live, features Chris Thompson, and the U.S. release includes a studio version of Chris performing You're The Voice (which he also performed as the finale of the World Liberty Concert in Holland in front of 120,000 people). This concert also featured Joe Cocker and UB 40.

In 1996 Chris completed a new Manfred Mann's Earth Band album entitled Soft Vengeance. The summer of that year saw a five month European tour to promote the album.

In 2000, Chris has signed an exclusive world-wide songwriters deal with Notting Hill Music in London. Notting Hill Music Inc. has also acquired the administration rights for the United States for Chris's back catalogue - CT Music Ltd. The CT catalogue includes his world-wide hit song 'You're the Voice' together with the songs Chris wrote for The Doobie Brothers, Michael Mc Donald, Heart, Isaac Hayes, Ray Charles and many more.

Chris's new home at Notting Hill Music London finds him in great company. They publish, among many others Will Smith, Paul Weller, Sir George Martin and Lisa Lopez (TLC). The early 2000's should be a fruitful songwritng time for Chris !!!

CATHERINE PORTER was one of the lovely backing singers who toured with BRIAN for the Back to the Light Tour. (Sigh... Those were the daze...) Catherine's angelic voice can be heard on Queen's Made in Heaven, Roger Taylor's Happiness? and Brian May's Brixton Academy, Another World and Spiderman ventures.

Catherine Porter has just released her stunning debut solo CD, Something Good, on Jive Records.

In these days when pop groups are assembled before our eyes on TV and the desire to be famous appears to count for more than whether you've got any talent, singer-songwriter Catherine Porter represents a breath of musical fresh air.

Listening to her debut album you're struck by its total absence of artifice and trickery. Instead, it's a record, which reaffirms the old-fashioned values of song craft and artistry. A collection of sophisticated compositions presented with honesty and conviction. An album steeped in the tradition of such singular American female singer-songwriters as Carole King, Rickie Lee Jones and Laura Nyro and which proves that even in this day and age there is still an alternative to Pop Idol.

Get ready to have your musical faith restored, and heaven knows, in an era when so much popular music has never seemed more disposable, we need artists likes Catherine Porter more than ever.

For more information, please visit and where you can hear samples of each track and see the video for her debut single, She's So Cool.
